On Friday 23 September 2011, the Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) organized a roundtable discussion with H.E. Ambassador of Iraq to Greece, Mr. Burhan Al-Jaf. This event gave the opportunity for a fruitful analysis of Greek-Iraqi relations as well as of developments in the Middle East region. Specifically, political relations between Athens and Baghdad were portrayed as excellent while the margin for further co-operation at the economic and cultural level was outlined. As it was discussed, Iraq has shown remarkable progress concerning its democratization offering various investment opportunities in areas such as agriculture, construction, education, energy and health. Greek expertise in the field of antiquities’ protection, for instance, was considered particularly important for Iraqi authorities. Furthermore, focusing on the Arab Spring both the Ambassador of Iraq and ELIAMEP’s representatives elaborated on the potential democratization of Middle East and North Africa countries and the obstacles raised against this process. They agreed, however, that a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will certainly facilitate further developments in the region.
