Michalis Mathioulakis was invited to speak on September the 7th in a closed meeting of experts in Cairo regarding the new landscape in energy relations between states in the Eastern Mediterranean and the effects of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine on a regional level. He presented an analysis on the structural elements of the energy landscape that determine the prospect of materialization of energy projects in the region. Mr. Mathioulakis also delivered a keynote speech at an event open to public on the same day. The event, titled “From the Gulf to the Mediterranean: The Emergence of a New Arch of Synergies on Energy and Climate?“ brought several Middle East scholars and practitioners together to discuss the role of the MENA region in the European Union’s quest for non-Russian energy resources, to both fulfill a short-term need and to enhance bilateral partnerships and expanding EU-MENA relations long-term. The discussion focused on the energy revolution and the resources involved, combined with the current global geopolitical policies, tensions, and opportunities. The events were organized by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies (ECES), the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC).
