phoThe 1st Annual Conference of the Crisis Observatory of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) on: “Austerity and Beyond: Politics and Policies for the Crisis in Greece and the Eurozone” took place on Friday December 13 at the Conference Centre of the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron), Vas. Sofias Avenue and Kokkali Street. Its aim was to provide an evaluation of the handling of the crisis in Eurozone and Greece and provide an opportunity for the presentation and discussion of new policy proposals.

The first part of the conference was devoted to the analysis and assessment of Eurozone’s reaction to the crisis. At the first session, internationally acknowledged experts from the European periphery, evaluated the adjustment programmes implemented in their countries. This comparative analysis was followed by a keynote speech entitled: “Assessing Eurozone’s Response to the Crisis”, by Philippe Legrain, Principal Adviser, Head of the Analysis Team, Bureau of European Policy Advisers (BEPA), European Commission.

The second part of the conference focused on the Greek crisis. At the first afternoon session renowned Greek experts presented and discussed the possibilities and challenges of a Greek recovery. The conference  ended with an open discussion , where academics and intellectuals tried to answer the question “Is National Consensus Possible in Greece?”.
