The South-East Europe Programme of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) organized a roundtable discussion on the state of play for the EU’s enlargement process and the relevant challenges for North Macedonia and the Western Balkans’ region with keynote speaker Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs of the Republic of North Macedonia, Bojan Marichic.

More specifically, the discussion moderated by head of ELIAMEP’s SEE Programme, Dr. Ioannis Armakolas addressed the current challenges for the EU’s enlargement process and the circulating alternative ideas and proposals, in the wake of the war in Ukraine, especially after the candidacy of Ukraine and Moldova and the relevant views from the Western Balkans.

Participants were also briefed about the state of play for North Macedonia’s EU accession process in 2023, the relevant reform process in the country, the reasons for the gradual decrease of the public’s support towards the EU as well as the current political situation in North Macedonia.

The discussion was concluded with an exchange of views on ways to move forward the Union’s enlargement process and the possible constructive role of Greece towards this direction.
