Emmanuella Doussis and Ilaria Espa wrote a book chapter on “Legal indicators as tools to assess the effectiveness of international rules related to the sustainable management of natural resources”, in S.Tsani and I. Overland (eds.), Handbook of Sustainable Politics and Economics of Natural Resources, Elgar, 2021, pp. 293-302.

The chapter clarifies the meaning of effectiveness and the difficulties involved in assessing the effectiveness of international rules related to sustainable development. It explains why it is important to integrate the true value of international rules in assessing sustainable development governance and how this could be eventually achieved, while highlighting the methodological challenges and their limitations. It argues that the definition of a methodology for indicators could serve as a bridge between various clusters of international agreements and, thus, further contribute to the implementation of the SDGs through measuring and communicating meaningful legal information on progress or regression of international rules related to sustainable development.
