The Youth Assemblies on Climate Change are experiential activities that are part of the “Climate Resilient Regions Through Systemic Solutions and Innovations” – ARSINOE programme, which is funded by the European Commission (Horizon 2020). The project seeks, among other things, to bring scientific knowledge closer to society, as well as to encourage the involvement of stakeholders and citizens in strengthening resilience to climate change through holistic approaches and promoting innovations. In total, 41 partners from 15 different countries are participating in the project, which is coordinated by the University of Thessaly.
The fourth Youth Assembly on Climate Change with the participation of University Students was organized by ELIAMEP and took place on January 9, 2025. A total of 30 students from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens took part in the Assembly. The participants studied the tailor-made educational material that was prepared for them and measured their personal carbon footprint. Subsequently, they studied the Athens Municipality climate policies already in place and identified shortcomings and areas for improvement, before listing measures to address them. Finally, through a structured dialogue, they agreed upon realistic and applicable policy proposals for the Municipality of Athens, focusing on three axes: climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as horizontal issues of awareness raising-education and participation. The proposals were listed down in the Local Green Deal for Athens, which was adopted as the outcome document of the process.
The Study Guide of the Youth Assembly that was distributed to the participants is available in Greek here.
