Previously isolated from the European mainstream, the Balkan and Black Sea regions require serious study as they are no longer considered to be “at the edge” but rather “at the heart” of Europe. Taking both an academic and a policy-oriented approach, this journal offers a unique opportunity to establish new paradigms of comparative analysis, breaking away from traditional ethnocentric angles and developing a deeper and more insightful understanding of the regions. The principal disciplines of our articles are political science (including comparative politics, international relations, political economy and political sociology) and modern history, but other disciplinary approaches may be accepted, as appropriate.

All research articles published in this journal undergo rigorous peer review, based on both an initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two reviewers. The journal is included in the ISI Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and since 2007 it is indexed and abstracted in: The Social Sciences Citation Index®; Social Scisearch®; and the Journal Citation Reports/ Social Sciences Edition. Our journal received its first Impact Factor in 2010.

Available now: Issue 24.2

Recent issues

Latest Articles:

Latest Issue 2023: Volume 23 (4)

Latest issue 2023: Volume 23 (4) This issue includes the special section “Battle for the European Union in the Periphery: Contestation Dynamics and Domestic Debates (LEAP)” by Ali Onur Özçelіk, Kadri Kaan Renda, An thony Costello, covering the contested Europeanization in the European Periphery, including Hungary, Serbia, Georgia, and Turkey.
