His research centers on nationalism, nation-building, and diaspora politics.<\/p>\n<p>Mylonas is the author of the award-winning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/us\/academic\/subjects\/politics-international-relations\/comparative-politics\/politics-nation-building-making-co-nationals-refugees-and-minorities\"><em>The Politics of Nation-Building: Making Co-Nationals, Refugees, and Minorities<\/em><\/a> (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and, together with Maya Tudor, co-authored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/gr\/universitypress\/subjects\/politics-international-relations\/comparative-politics\/varieties-nationalism-communities-narratives-identities?format=PB\"><em>Varieties of Nationalism: Communities, Narratives, Identities<\/em><\/a> (Cambridge University Press, 2023). He has co-edited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Enemies-Within-Global-Politics-Columns\/dp\/0197627943\"><em>Enemies Within: The Global Politics of Fifth Columns<\/em><\/a> (Oxford University Press, 2022) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/The-Microfoundations-of-Diaspora-Politics\/Alonso-Mylonas\/p\/book\/9781032042787\"><em>The Microfoundations of Diaspora Policy<\/em><\/a> (Routledge, 2021). As a Fulbright Scholar, he continued his graduate studies in the United States, completing an MA in Political Science at the University of Chicago (2003) and a PhD in Political Science at Yale University (2008). He later served as an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies (2008\u201309, 2011\u201312). Mylonas has held visiting positions at Korea University in Seoul, the Centre fran\u00e7ais des \u00e9tudes \u00e9thiopiennes (CFEE) in Addis Ababa, and the Carlos III\u2013Juan March Institute (IC3JM) in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>He has also served as Associate Dean for Research at GW\u2019s Elliott School of International Affairs from 2017 to 2018, and as the chair of the <em>Council for European Studies<\/em>\u2019 Historical Study of States and Regimes Research Network from 2019 to 2021. For the past fifteen years he has been a member of the board of directors of the <em>Association for the Study of Nationalities<\/em>, an academic association dedicated to the understanding of ethnicity and nationalism with a geographic focus in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, and Eurasia.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond academia, Mylonas wrote and directed the award-winning documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/searchingforandreas.org\/\"><em>Searching for Andreas: Political Leadership in Times of Crisis<\/em><\/a> and co-produces the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3EWkrh45kSACrAWmQB2Y3T\"><em>American Constitutive Stories<\/em><\/a>. His commentary on nationalism and geopolitics has appeared in <em>The Washington Post<\/em>, <em>Foreign Affairs<\/em>, <em>Foreign Policy<\/em>, <em>CNN.com<\/em>, <em>The Guardian<\/em>, <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, and other media outlets.
