The\u00a0Wider Europe\u00a0Programme of ELIAMEP is organising\u00a0an open\u00a0raising awareness\u00a0event dedicated to an issue that increasingly concerns young people, parents, educators, and professionals: the extremist exploitation of online gaming environments. The event forms part of the broader awareness\u2011raising campaign implemented by ELIAMEP under the European project\u00a0<\/span>GEMS | The Online Gaming Ecosystem as a Multi\u2011Layered Security Challenge<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As highlighted by GEMS research, online games function as vibrant social ecosystems,\u00a0creative and positive for\u00a0the vast majority of\u00a0users, yet not isolated from risks. Extremist actors\u00a0i\u00a0use these environments to approach young people, spread hateful narratives, or\u00a0normalise\u00a0harmful\u00a0behaviours. The event aims to provide\u00a0\u00a0evidence\u2011based, and practical information, avoiding alarmism or the\u00a0stigmatisation\u00a0of players, and contributing to the strengthening of digital resilience and critical thinking.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A central element of the event is the official presentation of the new GEMS guide for players, parents, and educators, developed by the ELIAMEP research team within the framework of the GEMS project.\u00a0The guide explains how risks\u00a0emerge\u00a0in multi\u2011layered digital ecosystems, how escalation can occur under specific conditions, and how\u00a0parents, educators, professionals, and young people can\u00a0recognise\u00a0early warning signs without panic or overreaction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event also includes an interactive reflection session with participants, as well as contributions from experts in research, education, cybersecurity, the gaming industry, and mental health. Speakers will highlight the technical, social, and psychological dimensions of the phenomenon, offering practical advice for safe and healthy engagement with gaming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through information, collaboration, and open dialogue, we can contribute to safer online gaming spaces and more resilient communities. This event\u00a0represents\u00a0another step in the broader European effort to empower societies against any form of extremist threat circulating in digital environments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
