A very interesting and timely research on Greek-Albanian relations was presented on Monday 17 June, at the Electra Metropolis Hotel by ELIAMEP – South East Europe Programme, in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation – Office for Greece and Cyprus and the Public Opinion and Market Research Unit of the Research Institute of the University of Macedonia.<\/p>\n

The survey was carried out in the framework of the project ALGREE between 15-21 April 2024 on a sample of 1165 persons, 17 years old and older, with scientific supervisors Dr. Ioannis Armakolas, Associate Professor of the University of Macedonia and Principal Investigator and Head of the ELIAMEP’s Southeastern Europe Programme, and George Siakas, Assistant Professor of the Democritus University of Thrace and Research Director of the Public Opinion and Market Research Unit of the University of Macedonia.<\/p>\n

According to the findings, the general picture, at the level of society, places Greek-Albanian relations at their best, with the majority of respondents having a positive opinion of Albanian immigrants in Greece and their contribution to its economic development, and the vast majority of them considering that their children are fully integrated. At the level of bilateral relations, the picture is more complex, with the survey reflecting the strongly negative attitude and concern of Greek public opinion on the Beleri issue and the rights of the Greek minority in Albania.<\/p>\n

More specifically, during the event, the results of the research were presented by the scientific coordinators, G. Siakas and I. Armakolas, with the latter pointing out that: “There is an improvement in the image of Albania in Greece, but negative opinions remain in the majority. In terms of bilateral relations there is a slight deterioration, but neutral opinions prevail. In Greece, public opinion on both the Beleri issue and on the respect of the rights of the Greek minority in Albania and the rule of law in the neighbouring country, public opinion in Greece is particularly negative towards the Albanian side. Public opinion recognises that third countries have had a rather neutral stance on the issue of Beleri. There are very positive and improving views on social and economic relations between the two sides. There are overwhelmingly positive views on Albanian immigration to Greece. Greek public opinion is rather ambivalent on the issue of Albania’s EU membership<\/em>“.<\/p>\n
