{"id":55599,"date":"2026-04-02T10:25:58","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T07:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/?post_type=activity&#038;p=55599"},"modified":"2026-04-02T10:25:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T07:25:58","slug":"o-loukas-tsoukalis-sto-epeteiako-synedrio-gia-ta-100-chronia-tis-akadimias-athinon","status":"publish","type":"activity","link":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/activity\/loukas-tsoukalis-at-the-centenary-conference-of-the-academy-of-athens\/","title":{"rendered":"Loukas Tsoukalis at the Centenary Conference of the Academy of Athens"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"the-content\"><p><\/p>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The President of ELIAMEP, Professor\u00a0<b>Loukas Tsoukalis<\/b>, participated as a speaker at the centenary conference marking 100 years of the Academy of Athens, held on March 31 under the theme \u201cGovernance: National Re-hierarchisations \u2013 International Constraints.\u201d Mr. Tsoukalis spoke in the second panel alongside\u00a0<b>Konstantinos Papanikolas<\/b>, Emeritus Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Founding President of the Cyprus Institute and founding member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, and\u00a0<b>Panos Tsakloglou,<\/b>\u00a0Professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business, former Deputy Minister and member of the Monetary Policy Council of the Bank of Greece, under the moderation of journalist\u00a0<b>Xenia Kounalaki<\/b>.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The discussion highlighted geopolitical shifts, the technological revolution, and climate change as key factors reshaping the policy-making landscape.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><\/div>\n<div>Mr. Tsoukalis emphasized that a defining feature of our time is that major problems are increasingly acquiring a global dimension, while politics remains primarily a national affair. This contradiction\u2014and the constraints it imposes\u2014is felt more acutely by smaller countries, whose choices are more limited. Yet democracy without choices cannot exist.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He further noted that globalization is now being instrumentalized by the major powers\u2014primarily Trump\u2019s America\u2014while existing rules are being dismantled and replaced by the law of the strongest.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Regarding Europe, Loukas Tsoukalis pointed out that Europeans were not prepared for such a world.
