Dr. Ronald Meinardus, ELIAMEP Senior Research Fellow and coordinator of research projects on Greek\u2013German relations was invited to present his research at this year\u2019s VDGG annual meeting, held in G\u00fctersloh on March 13\u201314. His presentation examined German public opinion on Greece and Greek public opinion on Germany. <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The field work regarding the image of Germany in Greece was funded by the Athens office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation while Greek-German organizations in both countries covered the costs of the opinion poll on Germans\u2019 attitudes on Greece.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Titled\u00a0<em>\u201cMore Sun than Shadow: German Perceptions of Greece and the Asymmetry of Mutual Perceptions,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the talk explored why Germans today tend to hold a considerably more positive view of Greece and its people than Greeks do of Germany. According to Meinardus, this asymmetry can be attributed to mainly three factors: the enduring and painful memories of the German occupation during\u00a0World War II; perceptions in Greece of\u00a0widely criticized policies\u00a0pursued by\u00a0Berlin\u00a0during the\u00a0Greek financial crisis; and the widespread impression in Greece that Germany tends to align more closely with\u00a0Ankara\u00a0than with\u00a0Athens\u00a0on Greek\u2013Turkish issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">On the same topic, Dr. Meinardus also delivered a lecture on March 12 to members of the German-Greek Society in\u00a0Wiesbaden.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"featured_media":55338,"menu_order":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false},"program":[17],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/activity\/55337"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/activity"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/activity"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/55338"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=55337"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"program","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.eliamep.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/program?post=55337"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
