Preventing hooliganism and fan violence: A game that needs to be played by everyone united – Triandafyllos Karatrantos

• Hooliganism isn’t an issue that emerged in Greece in the 21st century; it is not another case of “Greek” violent exceptionalism.
• Hooliganism evolved across Europe in the context of violent extremism.
• The violence associated with hooliganism now exists in two main forms: a) organized with violent confrontations planned in advance, and b) disorganized and pervasive both in sports venues and elsewhere.
• If we are to approach the issue of violent hooliganism as a whole in Greece, we must look at in the broader context of violence in the country.
• Violent hooliganism can only be dealt with effectively through the involvement of multiple bodies, as well as through a mix of initiatives and actions that go beyond repression and persecution, while also emphasizing prevention.
