Greece is important to the US because it wants to limit Russia’s influence, writes ELIAMEP’s Research Fellow Dr. George N. Tzogopoulos in his article for the newspaper TA NEA. That is why the US is investing in so many different military bases, especially in Alexandroupolis, explains Dr. Tzogopoulos, adding that Greece is doing the right thing by strengthening relations with the United States and seeking their support in the Greek-Turkish conflict. Greece needs to understand that, for better or for worse, Russia is becoming a significant actor in both the Eastern Mediterranean region and the Middle East. This is the context in which Athens must adopt a clear strategy regarding all international developments. When it comes to Russia, Dr. Tzogopoulos estimates that Greece is much closer to the politics of Boris Johnson than those of Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron. The same goes for its stance on Iran, especially after the assassination of Suleimani, the ELIAMEP’s Research Fellow explains.
