The 16th ELIAMEP European Seminar was held on Hydra on 6–9 October 2022 and proved a resounding success. This year’s seminar, which addressed “Europe in the new geopolitical context”, was staged with the kind support of the Open Society Foundations and discussed inter alia Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe’s foreign policy, NATO cooperation and European defence, the energy crisis and its consequences, the principle of unanimity and the possibility of amending the treaties, EU enlargement and the problems that have arisen. The seminar was attended by distinguished personalities from academia along with policy makers and former politicians, including Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council (2009–2014); Anthony Gardner, former US Ambassador to the European Union; Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Director, Bruegel Institute; Ambassador Jean-Claude Arnould, former Director General of the European Defence Agency; Klajda Gjosha, former Minister of European Integration of Albania. The attendees included several of the authors who contributed to the collective volume “Transformations of Europe” in honour of ELIAMEP’s President, Professor Loukas Tsoukalis, who was presented with the Festschrift by Professor Helen Wallace.

Over the course of the two-day seminar, we had the opportunity to pose questions to the Honorary President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, on how the crises are changing Europe, on the war Russia has unleashed against Ukraine, and on how he sees the future of the EU.
