Stricter border controls and the government’s month-long suspension of asylum applications from individuals illegally entering Greece were a good first step in stopping an uncontrolled flow of migration from Turkey. This was especially effective in the eastern Aegean islands but also in Evros, the land border, writes Panos Karvounis, ELIAMEP Senior Policy Advisor and former Director General of the European Commission, in his article for the Sunday edition of Kathimerini. If Greece had not reacted as strictly, it is almost certain that the EU would not have adopted its stance of support, Karvounis argues.
