“The first round of local elections in North Macedonia are defined by the stalling of the nation’s European course and by corruption allegations” – Yorgos Christidis

In an interview for DION Television ahead of the second round of local elections in North Macedonia on 31 October, Yorgos Christidis analyzed the reasons behind the rout suffered by the ruling SDSM party in the first round.

According to Christidis, the stalling of North Macedonia’s European course, plus the allegations of corruption made against members of Zaev’s government, largely determined voter behaviour in the first round.

He also said that Zaev’s threat to resign if his party loses the capital, Skopje, was part of his efforts to mobilize his supporters, given that over 50% of the electorate abstained in round one.

Christidis also talked about the current state of relations between Skopje and Sofia, before analyzing all the relevant data ahead of the third general elections in Bulgaria in a year.
