The theory that sectionalism, family and the Orthodox faith were the main elements of modern Greek identity prior to the influence of the Enlightenment is absolutely correct, writes Thanos Veremis, in an article for the newspaper TA NEA. Veremis explains how, before modern Greece became a cultural unit, just like Paparrigopoulos intended, it was a fractured collective of Greek-speakers and particularly Orthodox Christians from the mainland and the islands.
