It is in Europe’s best interest to help safeguard Greece’s external borders since no member state wishes to see increased migrant and refugee flows to Greece, a country that has already dealt with a staggering influx of individuals, or the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, explained Sotiris Serbos, ELIAMEP Research Fellow, in a radio interview. Serbos stressed that while the EU will help Greece to navigate the current crisis, this will not be enough long-term. The challenge, according to Serbos, is not simply to mitigate its effects but to effectively de-escalate the situation. If the recurring challenge of migration and refugee influxes does not get resolved now, one can only imagine the dire consequences it will bring about.
