Alexandra Voudouri spoke about Greek-Albanian relations on the occasion of the recent meeting of the two nations’ prime ministers on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tirana. She pointed out that a European perspective always motivates candidate EU member states to seek to resolve disputes with their neighbours. This was the case in the past with North Macedonia, while it is evidenced today by the agreement in principle between Greece and Albania to refer the delimitation of their respective EEZs to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. She also said that Albania today is a nation on track for Europe, but that a good many reforms are still needed, which is a process Greece can and should offer to support with its know-how.
She also noted that the media usually show more interest in the unresolved issues between Greece and Albania. She briefly referred to ELIAMEP’s new project (ALGREE: Albania / Greece Understanding Connecting Partnership), which seeks to counter this by highlighting those elements that unite the two peoples, the reasons why relations between Greece and Albania should be strengthened, and why having stable relations with its neighbour will also produce positive results for Greece.
