“Despite its obvious failures, Zaev’s government provided an example unique in the Western Balkans of governance that sought to deconstruct the foundations of the previous autocratic regime and move on with decisive and conciliatory moves both domestically and abroad. The failure of the experiment will send a powerful message to the region’s leaderships: that efforts to reform and policies of reconciliation are neither politically beneficial nor help accelerate EU accession”, Ioannis Armakolas notes in “The Balkans in turmoil”, which was published in To Vima.
“The EU should begin immediate accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania and co-operate with the US to confront the multi-level crisis in Bosnia and Montenegro, and relations between Serbia and Kosovo,” Armakolas added.
