Ioannis Armakolas said that Greece’s recognition of Kosovo’s statehood will eventually happen in the future, “since it is a common perception in Athens, among decision makers and analysts alike that Pristina’s independence is irreversible”.

He however stressed that “if Greece were to proceed with this move, it would firstly secure something in return for its own national interests and certainly it would weigh up the pros and cons as well as the timing, the broader geopolitical circumstances, and political balances within the country and in its relations with Cyprus”.

Additionally, I. Armakolas pointed out that “much of the opposition to the government, from the far-right parties to the leftist SYRIZA and the Communists seem to adopt a rather pro-Serbian position on the issue and fail to understand the dynamics in the Balkans and the broader European security. So, they would be a severely opposing factor that any move to recognise Kosovo would have to reckon with”.
