In a short comment on the recent renewed tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, as well as the political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the escalating dispute between North Macedonia and Bulgaria, Ioannis Armakolas observes that the recurrent crises in the wider Balkan region are largely the result of the failure on the part of the EU and the US to lead these countries safely through to their full integration into the institutions of the West.

He goes on to warn that the region is very close to entering “an irreversible period of geopolitical uncertainty, political instability and socio-economic crisis”.
