Venusberg - Beyond 2010On 14/15 February 2008 members of the Venusberg Group, of which Janis A. Emmanouilidis, Stavros Costopoulos Research Fellow at ELIAMEP, is a member, discussed their third report Beyond 2010 – European Grand Strategy in a Global Age with security and defence specialists in Stockholm, Sweden. The third Venusberg report outlines a “grand strategy” for a common European foreign, security and defence policy in a globalised world. The objective of this report is to point the way forward to enable the EU to fulfil its undoubted potential as a global ‘one stop security shop’ for Europeans. The report advocates that Europeans should fifty years since the adoption of the Rome Treaty jointly develop a long-term strategic vision that looks beyond 2010.

Beyond 2010. European Grand Strategy in a Global Age is the third report of the Venusberg Group. The previous ones were A European Defence Strategy (2004) and Enhancing the European Union as an International Security Actor (2000). The Venusberg Group is a high-level group of security and defence experts from across Europe brought together by the Bertelsmann Stiftung to examine the future of EU security policy. The Group was formed in early 1999 following a meeting that took place at a hotel on the Venusberg near Bonn, close to the Petersberg where in 1992 European leaders established the basis for EU defence.
