Athens 16 March 2006

Following the publication of the report on the Cyprus issue by the International Crisis Group, ELIAMEP held a closed discussion with Dr. Nicholas Whyte, Director, ICG Europe Programme, for the presentation of the report:”The Cyprus stalemate: What next?“.

Nicholas Whyte co-ordinates Crisis Group’s field research, analysis, policy prescription and advocacy activities in relation to the Balkans, Moldova and the Caucasus. He is responsible for 18 staff in five field offices, publishing fifteen to twenty in-depth reports every year and advocating Crisis Group’s recommendations to high-level policymakers in Europe and America. The Europe program includes analysis of the post-conflict situations in the Balkans, including the international protectorates in Bosnia and Kosovo, and also policy proposals for the frozen conflicts in Moldova (Transdniestria), Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) and Armenia/Azerbaijan (Nagorno-Karabakh).

The International Crisis Group (ICG) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation which publishes reports and briefing papers on countries at risk of outbreak, escalation or recurrence of violent conflict. Regarding the Cyprus issue, the report advocates a bizonal, bicommunal solution based on a commonly accepted proposal. The report can be found at the International Crisis Groups website.
