The Special Committee of the European Parliament on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis held a public hearing on ‘European economic governance and EU tools for economic and social recovery’ on Thursday, 18th March 2010. The President of ELIAMEP, Professor Loukas Tsoukalis, was among the main speakers. The Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. George Papandreou, was the Keynote Speaker.

The discussion was conducted by Mr. Wolf Klinz, Chairman of the Special Committee. The discussion focused on two main themes: 1) Economic Governance: Stability and Growth Pact and reform and sustainability of public finances (role of solidarity mechanism between member states) and 2) Budgetary Policy: Tool for economic recovery and strategic choices.

The full programme of speakers included Mr. Jean Pisani-Ferry (Professor of Economics, University of Paris-Dauphine, fellow of Bruegel), Ms. Daniela Schwarzer (Head of Research Division EU Integration, SWP, Berlin), Mr. Pedro Perez (Chairman, Itinere Group, Spain), Ms. Ann Pettifor (Fellow New Economics Foundation, UK) and Mr. Luca Paolazzi (Director of Research Cofindustria, Italy).

The hearing took place on Thursday, 18th March between 9.00-12.30 (Belgium time) and was broadcast live over the Internet.
