The need for transforming managerial practices in BSEC1 countries from those employed in centralized, command economies to those appropriate for a competitive market-driven business environment is widely recognized. However, little is being done to understand the horrendous difficulties that attend this challenge. Knowing what to change and what to leave in place -either because of its intrinsic value or because of its impenetrable and unyielding nature- further complicates the situation.
