Migration in 21st century Greece

ΜετανάστευσηThe collective volume entitled Migration in 21st century Greece, edited by Anna Triandafyllidou and Thanos Maroukis, explores the Greek immigration experience in the national context as well as within the contemporary European environment.

The authors offer an overview of the phenomenon of migration, presenting the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the immigrants, their integration in the labour market, as well as their broader sociopolitical integration in the Greek society. They also put forward specific proposals for a Greek immigration policy adapted to the needs of our times.
Migration in 21st century Greece is a compelling manual for graduates and academic researchers and a useful tool for journalists and professionals, as well as for every reader who needs a contemporary and recapitulative analysis of the emigrational phenomenon in our country.

Europeanisation and democratic deficits: the concept of “legitimization’s crisis”

ELIAMEP’s Working Paper no 9, by Dr. Manos Papazoglou, argues that the concept of europeanisation in contemporary political discourse is often being understood mainly as a process of modernization. It is disregarded, however, that europeanisation presupposes the merger of the nations’ and the union’s institutional elements. To the degree that this merger is underestimated or becomes obscure, the process of europeanisation might lead to democratic deficits and consequently it will not fulfill the goals of modernization. The dynamic balance of European integration: the past, present and future of the Euro

ELIAMEP’s Working paper no 6, by Giorgos Glynos, aims to examine the future of the Eurozone in the context of the current economic crisis and especially in the context of the Greek financial crisis. It expresses the view that the Greek financial crisis, despite the obvious responsibilities of the Greek governments, is also a crisis of the very system of the Eurozone. It ascertains that the coordination processes of the national financial policies, exclusively via the observance of the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact and the imposition of penalties for the countries that do not conform to the rules, do not sufficiently safeguard the stability of the Euro. We can’t go on like this: Greek debt crisis and the euro

With a 12.7% deficit for 2009 Greece is not the only country in Europe with a double-digit deficit. However, large deficits and debt, combined with mismanagement and lack of credibility, have produced an explosive mix in the Greek case. In the context of an unregulated global financial system that has run amok, the destabilising factor of market speculation dealing with sovereign credit default swaps has affected other vulnerable eurozone members as well, resulting to the weakening of the euro. CLANDESTINO research project: Workshop on Irregular Migration and Informal Economy

A topical question that has arisen during the last months is whether and how irregular migration stocks and flows are affected by the current economic crisis. The current economic and financial crisis is probably yet to reach its highest peak, however a stagnation of economic activity and rising unemployment have been felt by several countries all over the world. The overall negative climate clearly affects both migrant and native workers.
These are some of the thoughts with which Anna Triandafyllidou, Clandestino workshop coordinator has introduced the Roundtable on Irregular Migration and the Global Economic Crisis organized within the Clandestino workshop on Irregular Migration and Informal Employment in Europe on 27 April 2009, in Athens.
