He was one of the main representatives of Greece in the negotiations for the country’s adhesion to the EU and served inter alia in Cairo, NATO, Washington, the UN, Paris and London. In 1994 he was appointed Chairman of the Committee of the’12′ for the conclusion of the Stability Pact in Europe. Ambassador Stathatos significantly contributed to the work of the Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy. He became member of the Board of Directors in 1991 and was vice-President from 1994 until 2002. Even after 2002 he continued to show a high interest in ELIAMEP’s research and activities.

The title of his speech was: “Working together towards European recovery”. Professor Loukas Tsoukalis, President of ELIAMEP moderated the discussion, the video of which is available here.

Mr Dijsselbloem focused on the ways to overcome the challenges in the eurozone and on how to deliver sustainable growth. Conscious of the difficult times that Greece is going through and of the enormous efforts made by the Greek people, he identified a number of positive signs for the future of the Greek economy and acknowledged the fact that Greece is making progress in the right direction: towards growth and jobs. Furthermore, he referred to the strategy of the eurogroup, which is based on the following three pillars:

  • Continuation of the fiscal adjustment in a sensible way in order to put back public finances on a sustainable path
  • Addressing the problems that led to the collapse of the financial sector and promoting the completion of a banking union
  • Promoting structural reforms needed to enhance competitiveness and boost growth.

Mr Dijsselbloem also mentioned the following key priorities for Greece:

  • Tackling economic imbalances in order to ensure long term fiscal sustainability
  • Persevere with the implementation of the structural reforms’ programme
  • Making use of the strategic geographical position of the country. Greece processes a wealth of human capital and natural resources that will allow it to become competitive on a global scale.

On 2 June 2013 Junior Researcher of ELIAMEP, Mr Anastasis Valvis,  participated at the 6th Pan-Hellenic Conference of Environmental Policy and Management 2013 on environmental NGOs. The conference was organised by the department of Environment, University of the Aegean in Mytilene. Mr Valvis’ presentation focused on the contribution of NGOs in the management of transboundary water resources with an emphasis on the Prespa Lake case study. You can read the programme here.

In particular, it analyses the Europeanisation of Greek foreign policy in relation to Turkey’s EU accession and the impact of the Greek debt crisis on the EU accession prospects of the Western Balkans, the international dimension of Slovakia’s and Croatia’s democratisation. Also, it explores the role of the EEAS in the context of the Eastern Partnership and the impact of Europeanisation on curbing of irregular migration from EU aspirant countries.

The journal Southeast European and Black Sea Studies is one of the most successful in the field of area studies and is published four times per year. Managing Editor of the journal is Dr Ioannis Armakolas, head of ELIAMEP’s South-East Europe Programme, and editorial assistant is Mr. Anastasios Valvis, a researcher at the same Programme.
